The ever-increasing power of Athens that sparked fears for Sparta's allies, Thucydides mentions as a catalytic cause in the declaration of the Peloponnesian War

The reason for the Peloponnesian war was in fact the decision of Athens to further expand the trade and its political relations with Greater Greece, namely the cities of Lower Italy and Sicily.

In particular, the one serving this commercial and political goal was Corfu, even though it had an aristocratic constitution, while Cornith, who was also aristocratic but much more threatening commercially than the former, was the one who suffered from it. The Athenians wanted in every way to expand westwards and the occasion to mitigate the influence of Corinth came when war was declared between Corinth and Corfu.

The council has decided to lay down conditions in Athens, and if it refuses to declare the Peloponnesian War. She is asked to solve the siege of Potidea, to allow for the autonomy of Aegina and the cities of the Athenian Alliance that they wish, to allow trade in the Megarians and to excommunicate Alkameonids - essentially Pericles, who originated from the Alkameonides, from side of his mother.

The Athenians refused and so the Peloponnesian war began.
