Learn about the history of the Soka Gakkai from the three founding presidents, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Josei Toda and Daisaku Ikeda.
Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (1871-1944) founded the Soka Gakkai in 1930 with Josei Toda. An educator and philosopher, he was imprisoned during World War II for opposing the policies of Japan's militarist government and died in prison. (www.tmakiguchi.org/?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=…)
Josei Toda (1900-58) was imprisoned together with his mentor Makiguchi due to their opposition to the wartime regime. Daisaku Ikeda (1928- ) joined the Soka Gakkai at the age of 19 after encountering Josei Toda. Taking Toda as his lifelong mentor, he worked closely wit him to develop the organization, becoming the third president in 1960.
