This video depicts the methodology used by the European Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Bureau of the Joint Research Centre to produce Best Available Techniques Reference Documents. These are the scientific and technical basis for EU industrial emissions legislation and are key to the implementation of the Industrial Emissions Directive (2010/75/EU).

50.000 industrial and large scale farming installations across Europe use energy, water and raw materials to operate. As part of its processes, they also produce emissions to water, air and soil. In order to assure environmental and health standards for all European places and people, common technical standards agreed at European level must be met.

Best Available Techniques Reference Documents are the main reference documents used by competent authorities in EU countries when issuing operating permits for industrial installations that represent a significant pollution potential. They inform relevant decision makers about what may be technically and economically available to industry in order to improve their environmental performance and consequently improve the whole environment.
