Step 1: Remove the window sash from the frame: How to Remove and Reinsert a Double H...

(I notice the pros in the next video don’t do this step. They just leave it in the frame. I didn’t feel like I could do that for either of the next steps.)

Step 2: Remove the glazing beads: How to Replace Vinyl Glazing Bead

Step 3: Measure the IGU. Measure height, width and thickness. I did this without removing it from the sash.

Step 4: Order a new IGU from https://www.onedayglass.com/order-onl...

IGU is the second option here. You will need those measurements and more. Some of these are options of type of glass and some will be obvious if you want it to match your other windows.

Step 5: Put your glazing beads back in, put your sash back in and wait for a month for your new IGU to come.

Once you get your new unit, start over. Do steps 1 and 2 again, but this time you will be better at it.

Then you have a new Step 3: Remove old IGU. For me, this wasn’t so easy on one window,  very easy on the other. It’s all a matter of how much silicone the last installer used. The second window all I needed was a putty knife to gently pull it out of the sash. But the first one was stuck in good. I just broke the glass and pulled the remaining metal framing out. Then I cleaned up the gummy sash.

New Step 4: Put your new IGU in the sash. Again, second one was easy for me because I had measured carefully and realized I could make it not as big as the sash. The first one I had to finagle because it was such a tight fit. (If your new sash comes with a wire, do what they tell you to do…it’s easy.)

Back to Step 5. Just put the glazing beads back in and then the window sash with your new IGU is ready to go back in the window frame.
