Creative Sound BlasterX G6 review: A step up from integrated audio ?

The Creative Sound blaster is surely a name known to every long time PC gamer, I still remember playing Monkey Island or Wolfenstein 3d in 1990-1992 with the earliest Sound Blaster Pro or 16 and I still remember how revolutionary they were compared to the built in PC Speakers available at that time.
We've seen several generations of new sound cards since then, but in the last few years they seemed to be less and less essential due to the high quality chips in modern motherboards. Sound Blaster has anyway started becoming more popular again by proposing external USB sound cards or DAC which can be used for multiple devices, on consoles, smartphones , PCs or you're a/v receiver for your home theater setup. That's why I decided to buy the G6, just to answer one question, can it be seen as a stepup from onboard audio in modern motherboards or the difference is not tangible?
