Breaking the avoidance cycle is a skill taught in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). https://actfindyourpath.com provides educational videos explaining ACT, a therapeutic approach designed to develop psychological flexibility in facing the demands of life.

Rather than focusing on the elimination of symptoms, ACT helps individuals accept and allow difficulties to be present while creating rich and meaningful lives in line with their values. The ACT approach is used in both longer term ongoing therapy and in one-day training workshops that have proven highly effective for participants. ACT Find Your Path has been a pioneer and leader in implementing single-day ACT training workshops, which suit many patients.

This animated video about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) addresses how one can get stuck in the cycle of anxiety, avoidance and short-term relief. Breaking this cycle is an important skill taught in ACT.

The animated character is shown avoiding his challenges in several ways---hiding from them;  numbing the pain through smoking, drinking alcohol, eating and binge watching TV; and forcing himself to be overly "positive." In each case, the relief is short-lived and his suffering then increases. Through ACT Therapy, he learns how to remember what is important to him and stop repeating this cycle. This leads him to reduce his suffering and lead a more fulfilling life.

ACT training and skills can help you, too, break your avoidance cycle and experience improvements to your life.

Acceptance and Commitment Training - Finding Your Path is led by Lilian Dindo, PhD, a licensed clinical psychologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. She is also the producer of the set of animated videos about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) featured at https://actfindyourpath.com/about/
