Fluid Mechanics Lesson Series - Lesson 14C: Aerodynamic Drag on Cylinders and Spheres.
Why do golf balls have dimples? In this 8-minute video, Professor Cimbala examines the drag coefficient on spheres and cylinders, showing an empirical equation for spheres that spans the Reynolds number range from Stokes flow all the way to the drag crisis and beyond. He explains the so-called drag crisis and why surface roughness shifts the drag crisis to lower Reynolds numbers (hence the purpose of dimples on golf balls).
This video incorporates material from Section 11-6 of the Fluid Mechanics textbook by Cengel and Cimbala, Edition 4.
