Like clockwork on April 16 every year, residents of a small town in Gujarat, India ‘become’ Charlie Chaplin. The everyman yet the outsider, the ‘tramp’, is resurrected in Adipur town by dedicated fans. Bowler hats, walking sticks and the legendary penguin walk are seen everywhere. This Chaplin mania was brought to this town by one man – Dr. Ashok Aswani, India’s Charlie Chaplin. Dr. Aswani unfortunately passed away on November 23, 2023. He started Charlie Circle a superfan club dedicated to the lenegary comedian Charlie Chaplin in 1973. From screening Chaplin’s films to providing outfits to all those who would show up to participate in celebrating Charlie Chaplin’s birthday, Dr. Aswani’s magic put Adipur on the world map. And now, his grandson Talin is taking over the role – the role of keeping the tradition of celebrating Chaplin’s birthday, and more importantly, the role of keeping his grandfather’s legacy alive.
