Fishing trip in late September
Fishing trip in late September 2023.
The old Orvis graphite rod I received from a local fly senpai is a 7-foot No. 5 rod.
Most of the short graphite rods used in mountain streams today are #3/4.
This is probably due to the size of the fish and the casting range.
However, when I started fly fishing and before that, the first rod I used was generally a No. 5 rod, even for mountain streams, and this is the rod from that era.
However, this spec was exactly what I wanted, so it was a perfect fit.
If you always use a large fly to catch big yamame trout, the No. 5 rod is too long to explore the mountain areas where the main stream comes in, making it difficult to aim at short distances. I was hoping for a rod that would be easy to use even in mountain areas up to about 10 feet deep.
For the same reason, I got the ORVIS Fur & Fine 7'9" No. 5 in the spring, but this time I received a shorter 7-foot rod No. 5, so I tried using it in a mountain area to test its comfort. I did.
