Marisa Mell had an interesting quality as an actress. She played the siren often enough but was always able to mock her own image. It's one of the reasons she seems so at home in Ken Russell's first feature, 'French Dressing' where she plays a Bardot-esque movie star tired of being cast as a sex symbol (Mell was reportedly a close friend of Bardot and understood that kind of pressure to play to the public's idea whether willing or not). 'French Dressing' is not one of Russell's most universally admired films... It tends to be thrown away as not important, much like 'Billion Dollar Brain' while his TV films about artists and composers are pored over. I have to admit to being a bit of a lightweight and have always found these two early, very cinematic films, a greater indicator of his true talent than his film about Elgar. This is the kind of film that, in its gentle mockery of the English and the movies and celebrity, is so full of energy and life that it raises my mood.

Mell had been in an accident a year or two before this which had threatened to seriously disfigure her and had undergone plastic surgery. It's not obvious. Once you know there's a scar on her lip, you can see it in close ups, but otherwise, she looks almost absurdly perfect looking. Her symmetrical features and easy smile, making her the perfect embodiment of motion picture glamour.

She is most famous today for the cult movie, 'Danger Diabolik', directed by  Mario Bava than her work in comedies. Of course, 'Diabolik' was also very much a comic film as, in its own way, so was 'One on Top of the Other' (although in this latter case, the comedy is very dark). In 'Diabolik', Marisa Mell comes across as both glamorous and slightly unreal. Her eyes a golden grey-green and her hair silvery blonde her outfits changing every few minutes in much the same manner as Monica Vitti in 'Modesty Blaise' and Jane Fonda in 'Barbarella'. These films, all being comic book adaptations made in the late 60s by great directors having fun, fall into a similar category of cinema. A wonderful playfulness running through them all.

Mell is quoted as having said, 'Movies are my life, and my life is a movie.' And, in so many ways, her appearance matches that of a perfect movie star. Her appearance altering from film to film, from shot to shot sometimes, and yet always recognisably unique. Jess Franco wanted to make a movie with her... It's a shame that this never happened as I can only imagine that he would have made her the central focus of each shot... Would she have revealed another side of her character for him? It never happened... But there are so many films in which she starred, co-starred or just played one or two scenes in, and they're all worth seeing for her presence in them.
