Leaf mould or leaf compost is made by the decomposition of leaves that fell during the fall or autumn. It is one of the best soil conditioners any gardener could add to their garden. In Europe, we call it leaf mould while in the US it tends to be called leaf compost, Whatever you call it to know one thing. This stuff is like gold for the garden.
In this video, I am going to give you the following 6 tips on how to make leaf mould. Turn fallen leaves into leaf compost otherwise known as gardeners gold.
Tip 1. Rake Leaves in the direction of the wind to prevent them from blowing back over areas already raked.
Tip 2 Shred Shred Shred leaves when making leaf mould or leaf compost
Tip 3 Keep leaf piles moist, This helps the fungal and microbial life to continue to work converting fallen leaves into leaf compost or leaf mould
Tip 4 Build leaf compost piles high to retain warmth through the winter. this keeps them working breaking down the leaves into leaf mould
Tip 5 Add some of the forest floor soil into your leaves. This will add billions of fungal spores and microbes, greatly speeding up the process of turning leaves into leaf mould
Tip 6 Cover over the leaf mould pile to keep out the rain and stop the pile getting saturated which will just mean it mats together rather than breaking down.
These are 6 tips for making leaf mould or turning fallen leaves into leaf compost. In this video, I share many more tips so make sure you watch the whole video.
