I Can't Believe It's Not From the 80s! 1998 Gibson SG-Z Verdigris Review + Demo

When purchasing this guitar, I was baffled to find Gibson actually released this guitar in the late 90s. It seems so late 80s, it's not even funny. However, I KNEW there was a model that looked exactly like this from that time period and I wasn't wrong. The SG-Z is kind of like a more stylish version of the SG 90 Double from 1988 / 1989. The SG-Z got the lightning bolt string through bridge plate that the Explorer 90 got, but it lost the coil splitting feature.
Despite looking like this guitar has a single coil pickup, it DOES NOT. It is actually a Gibson 490R humbucker that has had it's coils stacked on top of one another. This gives it a single coil look- and kind of an in-between sound. Other features that make the SG-Z special is a 'Fender' 25.5" scale with 24 frets (traditional SGs are 24.75" with 22 frets.)
This model didn't sell well when it was new - the 2nd time wasn't the charm. However, that makes these collector's items today. They are a bit freaky, but so were all the other "90 series" guitars. The more you look at them, the better they look!
These are mahogany bodies with mahogany necks and ebony fretboards inlayed with split diamond inlays. 490R Stacked 'single coil' in the neck and a 500T bridge pickup.
