অ্যাকোয়াপনিক্স মূলত মাছ ও সবজি চাষের একটি সমন্বিত পদ্ধতি। এ ক্ষেত্রে মাছের ময়লা তথা দূষিত পানি গাছের খাদ্য হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং স্বচ্ছ পরিষ্কার পানি পুনরায় মাছের ট্যাংকে ফিরে আসে। এ পদ্ধতি বিশ্বব্যাপী একটি বহুল প্রচলিত বাস্তবসম্মত এবং দীর্ঘস্থায়ী খাদ্য উৎপাদন ব্যবস্থা যার ক্ষুদ্র ও বৃহৎ যে কোনো পরিসরে বাস্তবায়ন সম্ভব। এতে মাছে ব্যাকটেরিয়া ও গাছ পুনঃসঞ্চালন প্রক্রিয়া তথা পদ্ধতিতে কাজ করে। এখানে লক্ষণীয় যে, এ পদ্ধতিতে মাটি ছাড়াই সবজি উৎপাদন করা যায় এবং আরও উল্লেখ্য যে, এ ক্ষেত্রে ব্যাকটেরিয়া পানির সমুদয় বর্জ্য ময়লা ইত্যাদি তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে দূরীভূত করে, যেভাবে প্রাণীর কিডনি ও লিভার এ কাজটি সম্পন্ন করে থাকে।
একটি পাত্রে কিছু নুড়ি পাথর নিয়ে তাতে প্রয়োজনমতো সবজির চারা রোপণ করা যেতে পারে। অতঃপর উক্ত পাত্রের মধ্যে অ্যাকোরিয়ামের পানি প্রবাহ সৃষ্টি করতে হবে, এটি ক্ষুদ্রায়তনের অ্যাকোয়াপনিক্সের উদাহরণ হিসেবে গৃহীত হতে পারে। অভিজ্ঞতা কাজে লাগিয়ে আরও বড় পরিসরের অ্যাকোয়াপনিক্স তৈরি করা সম্ভব। এ প্রক্রিয়ায় মাছের খাদ্য, বিদ্যুৎ খরচও শ্রম তুলনামূলকভাবে খুবই কম লাগে। এ পদ্ধতিতে অধিক ঘনত্বের মাছের পুকুরের পানি একটি পাম্পের সাহায্যে সামান্য উঁচুতে অবস্থিত ট্যাংকে উত্তোলন করা হয় এবং সেই পানিই সবজি চাষের ট্রের আকারে পুকুরে ফিরে আসে। এর ফলে সবজি প্রাপ্তির পাশাপাশি চাষকৃত পুকুরের পানি পরিশোধিত হয় এবং যথানিয়মে অক্সিজেনের পরিমাণও বৃদ্ধি পায়।
