A mass exodus of people from the Burning Man Festival in the Nevada desert began yesterday.

Organisers asked people not to leave all at once, with the wait time to exit estimated to be around five to eight hours. Thousands of revellers have been trapped at the festival since Friday, when rainstorms turned the site into a muddy quagmire.

The rain turned the normally arid desert into thick clay, forcing the organisers to close the roads in and out of the festival site over the weekend. Organisers also asked attendees not to attempt to leave the festival on foot, although they didn’t explain why. But this did little to stop people, with DJ Diplo and comedian Chris Rock apparently among those who walked off the site.

The highlight of the festival, where a giant wooden effigy of a man is set on fire, had to be postponed until last night due to the rain. Fortunately, by Monday afternoon the mud had dried enough to allow larger vehicles like RVs to leave the site.
