Here we discuss the process of getting a 100% rating for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from the VA. The process starts with filing for VA disability using a VA Form 21-526 and submitting stressor statements and records from outside psychologists or counselors, if they have them. The case is then sent for a claim and pension exam (C&P) where a psychologist will complete disability benefits questionnaire. The psychologist will assess the degree of social and occupational impairment based on the symptoms described on the questionnaire. To be 100% disabled due to PTSD, one must meet the criteria of total occupational and social impairment as defined by 38 CFR 4.130. Factors such as gross impairment in thought process or communication, persistent delusions or hallucinations, and memory loss may be considered. It is important to note that even if one is employed, they may still be eligible for a 100% or 70% PTSD rating if their work accommodates their symptoms.
