The 'Scherzo' from Henry Litolff's "Concerto Symphonique" No. 4 in D minor was originally popularised on an old 78, made in 1933 with Irene Scharrer at the piano and Sir Henry Wood conducting. Even today it remains the only piece by which Litolff is known. Wood's successor, Sir Malcolm Sargent, recorded it again in 1959 for a stereo LP entitled "An Evening at the Proms." The pianist for the session was the celebrated Russian-born virtuoso, Shura Cherkassky, known for his spontaneity and brilliance at the keyboard. The Sargent "Proms" LP has been reissued by Guild Historical and it is from their CD that this dazzling track is uploaded with all due acknowledgements! (Guild GHCD 2393.)
