https://daviddas.com -- This is a long-form tutorial walkthrough showing how I create tempo maps in MOTU'S Digital Performer. Because we're using a classical work (the Rondo from Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Suite), the original performance is entirely free and requires almost measure-by-measure tempo changes (and sometimes down to the individual beat level as well).

This process allows us to generate a comprehensive tempo map that can then be used to sync future performances to the new master tempo map. It can also be used to conform the existing audio to a more consistent tempo, if that's the goal.

This technique is used extensively at the Academy of Scoring Arts (scoringarts.com) where we feature score breakdowns of many classical, film, and television works. Our creation process begins with the creation of a master tempo map like this, then all the individual instruments are recorded to the master tempo map, then when we do a study we have the ability to listen to the full orchestra, or any individual instrument stem or group, and everything stays in perfect sync.
