Dr Vinay Samuel Gaikwad explains how we can detect early symptoms of stomach cancer and why it is difficult to identify in the early stages. Watch as the doctor tells about the common indications which are ignored by us in the early stages.

Greeting to you all. My name is Dr Vinay Samuel Gaikwad, I am the director of Surgical Oncology at CK Birla Hospital in Gurgaon. We want to talk, how do we know whether we have stomach cancer or not? That is a question a lot of people ask me how do we detect this cancer early signs and symptoms of stomach cancer? Unfortunately, most of the time during the early phases of cancers or early stages there are no symptoms, so, it's important to get annual checkups when such as ultrasound and even an upper endoscopy if you have crossed the age of 50 years, that can detect cancers even before it has fully developed the early stages but if there are persistent symptoms such as abdominal pain which is not subsiding we might think it is gastritis or so we might self medicate but if it persists, it might be symptoms of stomach cancer. Feeling of fatigue or tiredness which is not solved over time, a sometimes black coloured stool which means the blood is passing out in the stool from the stomach, that something you take seriously. If you have anaemia that means low haemoglobin level and we don’t understand the reason for that, it is special it is coupled with black colour stool, a very important indication that there might be stomach cancer which sign we should not ignore. A loss of weight may be around 10 kgs in 6 months is a very significant amount of weight loss which is unintended, which is an important thing to keep in mind. So, if we look at all these symptoms especially if you have cancer running in the family, they should be looked at closely if it is stomach cancer, then definitely any small sign and symptom should be looked into and you should consult either gastroenterologist or oncologist or you have a family physician.
