Matthew Tirona (b. 2005) is a versatile Filipino-American composer with a prolific and acclaimed output. His music has been featured across the United States, including Boston (Jordan Hall, Tufts Distler Performance Hall), New York City (102 Franklin Art Loft), Pittsburgh (Slippery Rock University), and Iowa City (University of Iowa).

As only a first-year student, Matthew was awarded all three New England Conservatory Composition departmental readings–an accomplishment unheard of at the time–for his large ensemble works "Azure", "In Spring", and "Mother Nature & Father Sky"; the former recorded by the NEC Wind Ensemble and the latter two recorded by the NEC Philharmonia. In addition, Matthew premiered "Pie Jesu", a hypnotic art song for mezzo-soprano and piano, at the Spring 2024 Tufts/NEC Dual-Degree Recital.

As an electronic music producer, Matthew has premiered mixes at the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 Tufts/NEC Dual-Degree Recitals, at the New Music Concert at the University of Iowa Voxman Music Center (as a finalist in the Midwest Graduate Music Consortium 2024 Call For Scores), and at the NEC "Chirp" Music Technology Showcase. Matthew has also independently self-released a sizeable discography of ambient electronica projects.

As a bass choral singer, Matthew sings in the NEC Symphonic Choir (under the direction of Erica Washburn) and in the First Baptist Church of Boston choir. Matthew was also part of the "Cappella Clausura Smyth Mass in D Project", singing in the New England Premiere/World Premiere of the New Edition of Ethel Smyth’s "Mass in D" (under the direction of Amelia LeClair).

Matthew is enrolled in the Tufts University/New England Conservatory (NEC) Dual-Degree Program regarded as “one of the most selective and intensive programs of its kind.” He is pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Composition (Concentration in Music Technology) under Dr. John Mallia at NEC and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Tufts.

Up until his collegiate studies, Matthew was a self-taught musician, having never received formal training or private instruction. He taught himself music theory and composition after independently playing clarinet for a few years; later, he taught himself electronic music production. As a musician of Filipino descent, Matthew hopes to be an advocate for diversity in composition, a field in which Filipinos are heavily underrepresented.
