The AK47, or Avtomat Kalashnikova
The AK47, or Avtomat Kalashnikova in Russian, has been the world's most used automatic rifle since it was first introduced in the aftermath of World War II.
Soviet soldier Mikhail Kalashnikov dreamed of creating a rifle worthy of the Red Army soldiers after being wounded during the unrelenting Battle of Bryansk and being impressed by the Nazi military technology.
Inspired by the design of the German StG 44, the world's first assault rifle, and the iconic American M1 Garand rifle, Kalashnikov set out to create a unique weapon that would become a synonym of the Soviet Union.
Kalashnikov then created a rifle that packed serious firepower with its 7.62-millimeter cartridge. The result was impressive, and the AK47 would encompass the shifting ideologies of the Cold War and the conflicts that surrounded it.
The legendary Communist rifle would also be pitched against the American M14 and M16 in the Vietnam War and the revolutions that shook the world during the last days of the 20th century.
