What type of person would the unhappiest person in the world be? This is a question tackled in Soren Kierkegaard’s Either/Or, specifically the chapter titled, unsurprisingly, The Unhappiest One.
To Kierkegaard, the unhappiest one is someone who is stuck in either the past or the future but is never really present. More specifically, they are stuck regretting a past with missed out experiences. It’s a past that does not exist and is no longer available to them, and yet, they’re obsessed with it. As for the hope for the future, it’s a hope for those experiences that will never come, that should have been experienced already in the past.
Ultimately, the unhappiest one is someone who obsesses over a past he missed out on and a future that will never satisfy that obsession. The practical takeaway is to go out and live life. Take risks, make experiences, and don’t let opportunities slip by. #philosophy #existentialism #kierkegaard
