Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, has been named prime minister by royal decree. The post of prime minister is traditionally held by the Saudi king, and Mohammed bin Salman’s new appointment formalises the power he has wielded in recent years.

The decision is likely to protect the crown prince ahead of a lawsuit in the US in connection to his alleged role in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. His new post could possibly grant him sovereign immunity, protecting him from arrests and lawsuits outside of the kingdom.
