A cell is made up of three main components. These are cell membrane, cytoplasm and nucleus. Here we will discuss structure of cell membrane. Cell Membrane: Cell membrane is made up of three types of molecules; lipids, proteins and carbohydrates. Lipids are in the form of two layers called lipid bilayer. Phospholipids are the most common ones. Other lipid types in cell membrane include sphingolipids and cholesterol. Proteins are embedded in the lipid bilayer. The proteins traversing the whole length of the lipid bilayer are called "integral proteins". While proteins which are only attached to one side of cell membrane and not traversing the whole length are called "peripheral proteins". Carbohydrate molecules are also attached with lipids and proteins. Carbohydrate molecule attached to protein is called "glycoprotein". While carbohydrate molecule attached to lipid is called "glycolipid". Proteoglycans are also present. Difference between glycoprotein and proteoglycan is that; in glycoprotein, protein forms the major part, whereas in proteoglycan, carbohydrate forms the major part. All the carbohydrates that are attached to the cell membrane are collectively called "glycocalyx". A phospholipid molecule has two parts. Head, which is hydrophilic and made up of glycerol. And two tails, which are hydophobic and are made up of fatty acids. Above mentioned structure of cell membrane is also called "fluid-mosaic model" of cell membrane. The substances which are lipid-soluble can easily cross the cell membrane. For example, oxygen, carbon dioxide, steroid hormones, etc. The substances which are lipid-insoluble or charged cannot cross the cell membrane.
