▶ What is cellular manufacturing
A cell is a group of processing steps located next to each other,
allowing for a continuous flow of parts, documents, and other materials.
This can be in the form of a U shape, which is a common layout in lean production because it minimizes walking distance and allows for different combinations of work tasks for operators.
▶ U cell and numbers of operators
One important thing to note is that the number
of operators in a cell can change with changes in demand.
That's why having a U shape layout is beneficial,
as it facilitates the performance of the first and last steps
in the process by the same operator,
helping to maintain a steady work pace and smooth flow.
▶ Cell vs Line
Now, it's worth mentioning that the terms "cell" and "line"
are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.
A line is a sequence of processing steps in a linear fashion,
whereas a cell is a group of processing steps
arranged in close proximity to one another.
Another interesting point to consider is the direction of material flow in a cell.
Some argue that it should flow from right to left relative to the operator,
as most people are right-handed and it's more efficient and natural to work from right to left.
However, it's not always the case.
Material flow direction can vary and should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
