After taking a handful of questions regarding best options to capture good sound using a DSLR, I decided to create a quick video using the built-in mic on a Sony a5100, external Zoom H1 w/ a cheap lavaliere mic, and an external shotgun mic connected to a mic-in port on a Nikon D3200 (Comica V30).  NOTE:  Nikon removed the mic-in from the D3400.

I have mostly used the external Zoom H1 over the years and for good reason - it is SOLID in my opinion:).  In addition, I have always tried to avoid the built-in mics if possible.  What can you do if you do not have money for a Zoom H1 and would like to avoid the built-in mic?  Consider a shotgun mic like the Comica V30.  Rode mics are great but are double or triple the cost of off-brand shotgun mics.  Yes, they produce better quality, but I feel off-brands will fill the gap if needed.

NOTE (*):  I had to dig hard to find lavaliere mics.  Yes, they are CHEAP - 5 mics for roughly $6!:).  Do not be surprised if one or two are junk upon arrival but know that most should work:).  This is what I have used over the last couple of years:).
