“Honestly, it has been two years that we have lived without the joy and happiness of this event (Easter). As internally displaced people, we left our houses and we have been disconnected from our friends all around Iraq and the world. In this year, we are very optimistic about the current operations (launched by the Iraqi army and Kurdish peshmerga forces). We are hoping to celebrate in our own houses and lands next year.”

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Iraqi Christians gathered to celebrate Easter on Saturday evening in Alqosh, a predominantly Christian town in northern Iraq.
Many of those attending have been classified as "internally displaced people" ever since the Islamic State group (IS) took over their villages near the city of Mosul.
Most are experiencing a second successive Easter away from their own homes.
With around 600 people in his congregation for Easter, father Ghazwan Yusuf Baho said that his church had tried help worshippers feel removed from the conflict in the country, despite the frontline being only 15 kilometres (9 miles) away.
Haseeb Matti Hurmuz, a displaced person from the Assyrian town of Tel Skuf (also known as Tesqopa), said that he is optimistic about spending Easter at home next year.
Tel Skuf is currently still under IS control.
Hurmuz said the current offensive launched by the Iraqi army and Kurdish peshmerga forces, in cooperation with the international coalition, gives him hope that homes will be liberated soon.
