This is rare or unique film of Anna Pavlova being partnered in a ballet on stage with her company. It was recorded possibly in Perth on an Australian tour of the late 1920s. The footage comes from an old Russian documentary on the legendary ballerina.

She is dancing in the adagio from Act Two of 'Don Quixote' and is being partnered by either Laurent Novikoff (if filmed before 1929) or Pierre Vladimiroff (if filmed after 1928). This is the Gorsky 'Dream' scene.

All this information was very generously supplied by fellow YouTuber nomoretwist1 and I am very grateful for his/her generosity in supplying it.

I've just found a newspaper review of that 1926 tour which is referred to on the site http://ausdance.org.au/articles/detai...

“Pavlova’s final week in Sydney saw the spectacular two-act ballet Don Quixote performed. This was the condensed version arranged by Laurent Novikoff, based on Alexander Gorsky’s 1902 version, and performed to music by Minkus. The first Australian performance had been given in Melbourne on 5 April.

The Daily Telegraph of 17 May 1926 reported,

Pavlova… was vivacious and intriguing, and she danced gloriously… The occasional posturings were artistic beyond the imagination, while her inspiration seemed to disclose itself in the work of her associates. The ballet is best described in one word—superb…To say that Pavlova was the perfection of her art… is to repeat the obvious… [she] was ‘better than the best’.”

Enjoy!
