“Over a thirty-year period, Cassatt took the activities of handwork, from embroidery and mending to music-making, seriously as an artistic subject.
With her own expert handling of paintbrush, pastel crayon, and etching needle, Cassatt highlighted her subjects’ concentration on their deft manipulation of needle, thread, or the strings of an instrument.
A loose parallel can be drawn between the handwork of these women and Cassatt’s own, even as Cassatt was anxious to distinguish herself as a professional artist who depicted the creative energy of other women.”
Words, written by Jennifer A. Thompson and Laurel Garber, appear in the Mary Cassatt at Work Exhibition catalogue, published by Yale University Press.
