According to the new bill, which was published yesterday and comes into force immediately, a fee of 20 Bulgarian leva ($10.76) per megawatt-hour of gas of Russian origin will be introduced. The document is aimed at implementing EU sanctions against Russia, introduced in response to its invasion of Ukraine. Its goal is fair taxation of profits earned on the territory of the state and an increase in budget revenues. Bulgaria itself does not import gas from the Russian Federation, but it is an important route for fuel to other countries. Nearly half of Russia's pipeline gas reaches Bulgaria from Turkey via Turkish Stream for onward transport to Hungary, Serbia and other parts of southern Europe.
