(11th Sultan Selim II - History of Ottoman Empire 1524-1574)
Everyone is interested in Ottoman Empire History. Fans have been familiar with Ertuğrul Ghazi and Osman Ghazi since the release of the turkish series Dirilis Ertugrul and Kuruluş Osman. But everyone wants to know about Ottoman Empire. Who was Sultan Selim II?
Sultan Selim II was born in Istanbul on May 28, 1524, to Hurrem Sultan. His father's name was Suleiman the Magnificent. After the death of Suleiman the Great in 1566, his son Selim II ascended the throne in Constantinople and became the 11th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Selim II was the first Ottoman sultan to live in the Haram Sara. He lacked all the skills required for kingship. That's why the mention of the Ottoman Empire, especially the era of Salim II, is incomplete without Sokollu Mehmed Pasha.
Sokollu Mehmed Pasha was a very capable and intelligent man. Based on merit, he held important positions in Sultan Suleiman's palace and then rose to the position of Prime Minister. Married to Salim Sani's daughter. The apparent ruler was Salim, but the real ruler was Sokollu Mehmed Pasha. Salim II married once in his life, and among his children he had 11 children, including 7 sons and 4 daughters.
Selim II's brief reign saw a series of Ottoman conquests, with significant conquests of Tunis and Cyprus in addition to the end of the rebellion in Yemen. The conquest of Cyprus sent shockwaves through the Christian kingdoms of Europe as the Ottomans continued to advance even after the death of Suleiman I. In this regard, a plan was made to weaken the naval power of the Ottomans by forming a coalition of the Christian states of the Mediterranean under the leadership of Chancellor Don John of Austria. While the command of the Turkish fleet was in the hands of Ali Pasha. The two fleets met on the shores of the Gulf of Lepanto and in a few hours the Turks suffered a great defeat and Ali Pasha was killed.
But the determination and independence shown by the Turks after that and in a short period of time building another magnificent fleet is proof of their greatness. Selim II was the first Ottoman ruler during whose reign the Turks were at war with the Russians. The cause of this war was the city of Astrakhan. And this city was in the possession of Russia and was of great importance in all respects. In 1568, the Turkish army clashed with the Russian army to conquer this city.
The Turkish army could not capture the city, but Russia did not want a war with the Turks, so an armistice agreement was reached, after which the Turks and Russia did not compete with each other for a century. Selim II died in 1574. He reigned for a total of 8 years. His mausoleum is in Hagia Sophia, Istanbul. After him, his son Murad III ascended the throne.
