FOOD & RESTAURANT INFO
👅 What is “Gyutan”?
牛タン or “gyutan” is the most famous delicacy in Sendai City in Miyagi, Japan. It literally translates as “beef tongue”, but it is much more than just a cow tongue! Originally created by a Sendai yakitori restaurant chef looking to create unique dish inspired by the taste of Western restaurant beef tongue stew in post-war Japan, gyutan has since become synonymous with Sendai City, and you will find “tan” shops almost anywhere you go! And while even some Japanese natives might be a little hesitant to try beef tongue at first, Sendai’s gyutan is famous both nationally and globally for its ultra thick cuts and special salt-grilled cooking method that produces the juiciest, most tender meat around. If you visit Sendai, you must try this iconic Japanese dish!

📍 GYUTAN RESTAURANT
Charcoal Grilled Beef Tongue Tanya Zenjiro Kitane Store / たんや善治郎 北根店

What to eat
Visit Zenjiro at lunch time for the best deals with a thick, juicy beef tongue teishoku “牛たん定食” (set meal)! We ordered the beef tongue stew and a 4 tongue piece set meal, which comes with all of Sendai beef tongue’s staples: mugimeshi (barley rice), oxtail soup, and pickles!

📍 MOCHI STORE
Murakamiya Mochi-ten / 村上屋餅店

🍡 About the store
The Tohoku region is a large producer of edamame soybeans (in fact, the Tohoku region accounts for a quarter of Japan's total soybean production!), and it is said that even the famous samurai, Date Masamune, who once ruled the area, was known for eating mashed soy beans and mochi rice cakes for energy on the battlefield. Once created by using the hilt of samurai swords to mash the beans, Murakamiya Mochi Store took the opportunity to become the first store to commercialise this bean and mochi combo, づんだ餅/ずんだ餅 “Zunda Mochi”, in modern day Sendai City, where Date once ruled.

Founded over 140 years ago, Murakamiya is a long-established mochi specialist store and is Sendai’s number one zunda mochi seller. It is such a firm favourite among locals and tourists that no matter what day of the week, you can expect to find people queuing up for a taste of their iconic Sendai dessert. The secret behind Murakamiya Mochiten’s success and delicious zunda mochi is their method for processing the edamame beans. Their thin transparent skin is painstakingly removed one by one before the beans are mashed, and the store uses no artificial colours and less sugar than other recipes so that customers can enjoy the original taste of the beans, the way that the samurai would have way back when! The shop serves such a generous helping of their famous zunda, that you might want a spoon to eat it all and the best part is that Murakamiya only serves mochi on demand, so you can expect to enjoy freshly made mochi when you visit!

What to eat
We got Sendai’s representative dessert, づんだ餅 “zunda mochi” (green soybean rice cakes) and くるみ餅 ”kurumi mochi” (walnut mochi). If you are lucky enough to dine in, we recommend trying the 三色餅 “sanshoku mochi” (three flavoured mochi), which comes with their signature zunda mochi and two other flavors, ごま “goma” (black sesame) and walnuts, but if you’re really craving more of their zunda, you can ask to switch the flavours!
