When Lamar and composer Mahran Mireb appeared on the Lebanese television show “Bayt al-Qaseed,” hosted by Zahi Wehbe, Mahran lamented the difficulty in finding poetry in colloquial dialects that is fit for musical composition. Mahran was soon contacted by Lebanese poet Charbel Youssef Zgheib, who presented him with his colloquial Arabic poetry as lyrics to be sung by Lamar. This collaboration resulted in “Sawt El- Aleb” which tells a love story marked by absence, reflecting on the manifestations of the heart on a journey of yearning. As a child, she was taught to play the keyboard and clarinet, and went on to learn Western style singing. She then specialized in oriental music at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. She began to release records inspired by Arabic and world music, focusing on classical singing under diverse influences. Her first oriental music release came in 2015, marking a pivotal point in her career. Upon the release of “Aynayki Enwani,” she was invited to perform at the Fes music festival in Morocco. Her subsequent releases also helped reveal new horizons in the Arab region. With her unique style, Lamar sings about love in all its manifestations, with the Arabic language an ever-present focus in her music career. She is keen to distinguish her work with virtuoso performances, melodic depth and the beauty of the selected poetry, whether written in classical Arabic or colloquial dialects. Lamar’s musical project presents Arabic Tarab songs accompanied by traditional instruments, in addition to presenting world music arrangements with orchestral effects. Lamar believes that this approach is capable of presenting and renewing various musical styles while highlighting the importance of lyrics and the musical concepts behind them.
