Silverfish - The Setting:  Austin, Texas | West Texas Desert

Ironically, isolation and loneliness often plague people in places that are the least physically isolated or lonely.  Expansive cities like Austin are wonderful places to get lost as they tend to attract people who live with their eyes on the horizon; concerned with a better job, more money, a better life, and a better future. Such lives, however, cannot escape monotony anymore than small-town living and the quieter venues that urbanites often flee from for the weekend. On the surface, the contrasting images of a crane-filled skyline in Austin when juxtaposed with the cotton-candy celestial sphere of the West Texas desert can make the two places seem like diametric opposites. But in reality, they are quite similar in the fact that neither is a cure for loneliness, nor is either a substitute for kinship. The goal with this film is less about creating answers and more about creating questions...  about life and the human pursuit of happiness.

Note from Writer-Director, Matthew Thornton:

I am fascinated by the ambivalence that often plagues people as a result of the struggle to shape their desires within the boundaries of society. Psychological conflicts such as these, at first, may seem unclear and unimportant to those who endure them. But when a person becomes stuck in a rut for long enough – then like an infection, the problem will eventually become an emergency for which a solution must be found. The characters in Silverfish serve to explore the chasm that divides people between their personal desires and the need for community acceptance.

Note from Award-Winning Actress, Rachelle Grossman - starring as Arleta:

"Silverfish is a dynamic film that explores how an individual’s path and personality is ultimately shaped through the experiences of their youth. These personal backstories inevitably determine the choices people make in their pursuit of happiness, and many times these choices push the boundaries of what’s acceptable in society...  When first approached with this script by director/actor Matthew Thornton, I was immediately impressed by the writing and storyline. The subtle fragility of the characters, coupled with very likable qualities, is overlaid with brazen sexuality and bravado that makes for an extremely interesting narrative. Arleta believes her profession is a noble one; however her time spent being open with strangers leaves little room for her own personal relationships and growth, and ironically, has prevented her from being able to maintain an open connection with her only living family member, her younger brother, Shane. As the story evolves, this dichotomy results in a film that is funny, sad, sexually-charged, thought-provoking and ultimately redemptive. Everyone can find a bit of themselves in the Silverfish characters as they struggle with how their past and present choices impact their love lives, careers, and relationships.

Note from Lead Actress - Grace Marlow - starring as Hannah:

"I agreed to be a part of this project because I felt that the script could open minds to philosophies that hit the depths of every human’s core, sex and the struggles that come with it. Sex and love. Sex and shame or guilt. Sex and Society. Sex and Self. I believe a good film should change the world’s view, or at least introduce a new world view, one that is filled with love and compassion for the human race, pathos. I fully feel that Silverfish does that. This film hits on the hardest things we humans deal with, change and vulnerability. Change and vulnerability in relationships, in friendships, and in oneself.  Though the story revolves mainly around an estranged brother and sister who have to come together to fulfill a promise made to their now deceased mother, each character faces fears, accusations, realizations about themselves that forces them to change their view of the world and the manner in which they are going to move forward in it. Its uplifting messages are something that is rarely seen these days in films."
