Learn how to make this DIY kimono cardigan without a pattern in this easy step by step sewing project for beginners! Use it as a great layering piece or wear it as a DIY swimsuit cover up over your bathing suit. This kimono is one of my favorite sewing projects for beginners who want to learn how to make clothes easy because it’s a loose fitting jacket and the process of cutting and stitching is very simple!

MATERIALS NEEDED:
-1 ½–2 ½ yards of non stretch fabric (I used 1.5 yards and my fabric was 58” wide. If yours is much narrower or if you want a longer kimono or long sleeves, get 2 or 2 ½ yards.)
-1 ½-2 yards of fringe trim
-2 or more yards of a double fold bias tape
-Loose fitting t-shirt to use as a template
-Basic sewing supplies – sewing machine, needle, thread, pins, measuring tape, scissors, etc.

I’ll show you all the steps of cutting and stitching a kimono cardigan including: how to use a t-shirt to cut out the bodice pieces; how to make a kimono sleeve pattern using a t-shirt as a guide; how to sew the pieces together; how to use bias tape to finish the neckline and opening; how to hem sleeves; and how to add fringe trim to a kimono.

These look great over a dress, tights, and boots during the fall, or a dress and sandals or jeans and a solid tee/tank during spring. They also make the perfect kimono swimsuit coverup for summer!
