Mercedes-AMG introduces the SL 43, an innovative entry-level model for its newly developed roadster. This 2+2-seater features a two-liter inline four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric exhaust gas turbocharger, derived from Formula 1™ technology. This groundbreaking turbocharger ensures immediate throttle response and enhances efficiency. The 48-volt electrical system powers the turbocharger and a belt-driven starter-generator, giving the SL 43 381 horsepower and 480 Nm of torque, with an extra 14 horsepower boost when needed. The vehicle offers extensive standard equipment and customization options.
The SL model has evolved from a racing car to a luxury sports car over 70 years, and the new Mercedes-AMG SL combines sportiness with luxury and technology. The SL 43, in particular, stands out as the world's first production car with an electric exhaust gas turbocharger, providing tech-savvy buyers with a unique driving experience. Its lightweight four-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive result in distinctive handling characteristics.
The electric exhaust gas turbocharger, developed from Formula 1™ technology, enhances throttle response across the entire engine speed range, delivering a more dynamic driving experience. It also offers higher torque at low revs and maintains boost pressure even when the driver lifts off the accelerator or applies the brakes.
The SL 43's innovative engine produces 381 horsepower, with an additional 14 horsepower from the belt-driven starter generator. The vehicle operates as a mild hybrid, featuring a 48-volt onboard electrical system for efficiency and smooth transitions between start-stop and gliding modes.
The SL 43 comes with a longitudinally positioned M139 four-cylinder engine, paired with an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission, replacing the torque converter with a wet start-off clutch for improved response. It boasts impressive acceleration, reaching 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 275 km/h, all while maintaining relatively low fuel consumption and emissions.
The new SL series features a 2+2 seating configuration, offering rear seats suitable for occupants up to 1.50 meters tall or additional storage space when not in use. The chassis is constructed from lightweight materials such as aluminum, magnesium, composites, and steel, providing optimal rigidity for driving dynamics and safety.
The exterior design of the SL 43 showcases classic SL proportions, with a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a powerful rear end. It features 19-inch standard wheels, with optional aerodynamic 20 or 21-inch wheels available. Inside, the SL 43 offers a blend of analog and digital elements, with a fully digital instrument cluster and the MBUX infotainment system.
The SL 43's seats come in various upholstery options, from ARTICO man-made leather to NAPPA leather and NAPPA AMG leather. Trim elements are available in different finishes, including high-gloss black, aluminum, carbon, and MANUFAKTUR chrome black. The vehicle offers five driving modes, from "Slippery" to "Sport+" and an optional "RACE" mode for a customizable driving experience.
