How can I find bats with the detector?
Build your own bat detector with this kit complete with detailed instructions. The kit becomes a high quality ultrasonic detector that lets you hear the bats you’re looking for. Everything you need is in the box which becomes the outer case for your detector. With 17 parts this is a fun project to make and use.
What does this teach?
Bats may not be blind but in the dark it becomes harder to see anything coming so bats use a type of echolocation to help them navigate. Echolocation is made up of soundwaves on a frequency too high for the human ear to hear as we only hear up to around 20kHz. Bats can produce calls at 40kHz or higher depending on species. The Franzis bat detector can transform these unheard frequencies into audible sound letting you hear where the bats are coming from. Other things such as electronics also give off sounds that are audible on similar frequencies - listen and see what you can hear.
How do I put it together?
Learn electronics and try your hand at soldering. Most of the components are already attached to the board, there are just a couple of components and connections to solder. Use the capacitors, resistor, potentiometers, microphones, speakers and more to create your detector. The detector had two knobs on the front - one controls the frequency which you use to find the specific frequency the bats are calling at and the other controls the volume of the speakers. This kit requires one 9V battery (sold separately, Order Code L46AL).
