You don't have to overpay and overwait at McDonald's to taste this all-timer of a sandwich. Do it from home! This is our take on a Filet-O-Fish.

Servings: 1

Ingredients:

Sandwich:

1/4 lb. cod filet
1 cup Panko bread crumbs
Salt & pepper to taste
2 eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 pint vegetable oil
1 slice American cheese
2-3 dill pickle hamburger slices
Brioche bun
Tartar Sauce:

1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tsp. lemon juice
1 tbsp. capers, diced fine
1/2 tsp. dijon mustard
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp. sweet pickle relish
Sauce:

For the tartar sauce, combine all ingredients, cover, and refrigerate. We suggest letting your sauce sit in the fridge for a couple hours - even better, make it the day before. Always best to let the sauce ingredients marinate.

Sandwich:

Get yourself 3 medium bowls…in bowl #1, crack and whisk your eggs. In bowl #2, add about 1 cup all-purpose flour. Salt and pepper your flour to taste. This amount is for 1 sandwich - you can obviously adjust this amount if you are making more than 1. In bowl #3, add your Panko bread crumbs.

Take your cod filet and dip the entire filet in the egg wash. For each “dipping” step, make sure your filet gets coated on all sides. Then, remove from egg wash and dredge your filet in your flour mixture. Once coated, dip it back in your egg wash. Then last step, dredge the filet in the panko bread crumbs. Place the coated filet on a plate - we’re now ready to fry.

In a deep frying pan, add your vegetable oil. Turn burner on medium heat. Make sure your oil is hot before you add the fish (oil will start to slightly bubble).

Add the fish filet to the oil. Cook on each side until the crumbs are golden brown. Fish cooks quickly, and we don’t want to over cook it, so as soon as those bread crumbs are golden brown, flip the filet and cook until golden brown on the other side. It’s only going to be a couple minutes per side, so just make sure you watch it. Once done, remove the fish back to a plate.

While your fish is frying, place your single slice of American cheese on the bottom half on the brioche bun. Place both sides of the bun on a baking sheet covered in foil, and slide them into the over under the broiler to lightly toast and melt the cheese. You don’t want to burn your cheese, so keep an eye on it - probably only needs a minute to melt.

Remove the bun(s) from the oven. Place your cooked fish filet on the bottom bun over the cheese. Add the pickle to the top of the fish. Sprinkle with a little sea salt for flavor. Generously spread the tartar sauce on the top bun and you’re done!

Enjoy!
