Network centrality is a common measure in network analysis, but it’s often poorly understood. In this video we compare the 4 most used definitions of centrality, each with its own meaning, pros 👍🙂 and cons 👎 ☹️. Which centrality measure is best?

WHAT IS CENTRALITY?
This is an answer to the question: What node is important? The word important has a multitude of meanings, leading to many different definitions of centrality.

WHY CENTRALITY?
Why does network centrality matter? Because networks are everywhere, and centrality gives us crucial information about these networks.
We limit ourselves to an undirected network, for example a social network. In these networks it is about identifying the most influential members.
In a small network centrality is sometimes easy to see, in other networks this is more difficult. The larger the network, the more challenging.

DEGREE CENTRALITY
The most simple and popular is the degree centrality, this centrality counts the number of neighbours of a node. It can be used to find nodes with many direct contacts and is often considered a measure of activity.
👍The simplest to calculate centrality.
👎 Measures only locally; it doesn't really tell us where the node is in the network.

CLOSENESS CENTRALITY
Closeness centrality measures how close a node is to other nodes in the entire network: the sum of the shortest paths. In the centre is now the node that can reach all others in the network most quickly and help to find good broadcasters. This is important in diffusion processes.
👍Node position in total network.
👎 Sensitive to changes in this network.

BETWEENNESS CENTRALITY
Betweenness centrality attempts to capture the role of nodes as a bridge between other groups of nodes by calculating all the shortest paths and then counting how many times each node falls on one. The betweenness centrality indicates the degree of potential control, a node standing between many others can exert more influence on the flow in a network.
👍Flow perspective.
👎 A bridge can also be on the periphery of the network and this centrality is also sensitive to changes in the network.

EIGENVECTOR CENTRALITY
Eigenvector centrality states that a node is important if its neighbours are important. An extension of the degree centrality. Not what you know, but who you know is important.
👍Node position in total network.

MORE CENTRALITY MEASURES
This are just 4 of many measures of centrality, but there are more: e.g. harmonic centrality, eccentricity centrality, information centrality, PageRank, authority & hub, Katz centrality and power centrality.

LIMITATIONS
#1 It is important to know there are differences when your network is directed.
#2 Each definition of centrality has its own meaning. This video shows that 4 different definitions of centrality give 4 different choices of the main node.
#3 Centrality measures are designed to identify the most influential nodes. For most other nodes, this ranking may be meaningless.

BEST CENTRALITY MEASURE?
There is no best centrality measurement, carefully choose a centrality that best suits your context.
