This weeks news is full of the very dumb,  creative, good and bad. Some of it will vary based on your personal and subjective view while others are objectively fact.

The dumb and bad includes Australian chiropractors treating infants and babies. This is a terrible idea and has rightfully received criticism. So much so that the chiropractor peak body ‘reviewed’ their guidance to do this and put it on hold.

This was all well and good until they decided that they could and would continue to treat infants. This is based on a Cochrane review. The problem? That same Cochrane review and subsequent review did not find what the chiropractor body says it does.

Less promising and especially worrying is the rise in penis cancer cases. This has been true for the last few decades and is expected to get worse yer on year.

The change is driven by a combination of factors. One of the major driving forces is the human papilloma virus. A disease that we have a vaccine to stop so we need to wait and see how long the rise continues.

There is also good news about HIV. More accurately a prophylaxis for HIV that has demonstrated nearly 100 percent protection in South Africa and Uganda. Despite such good results we won’t see this available for years if not decades since it is in a phase 1 trial.

Other promising news is a chemical that will amplify the duration of narcan or naloxone. Narcan is a drug used to treat opioid overdose. The downside is that you need multiple doses to protect someone until the risk of overdose passes.

With the rise in instances of fentanyl overdose this is important.

There are also similarly strong disappointing news. The first being that a large percentage of tattoo ink from the factory and in new, sealed condition is already contaminated with bacteria,. In some cases the kind of bacteria more likely to be highly pathogenic.

As you defeat the first line of immunological defence in the human body during the tattoo process this is rather bad. It opens up the recipient of tattoos to infection and later sepsis.

Just as silly if not more so is the IARC determination that talc is a probably carcinogen. This a repeat of the glyphosate debacle.

The short version is that IARC used a meta analysis. This found a weak degree of support. At the same time an actual single large scale found nothing of the sort.

This does not mean there is no reason. Historically talc has had asbestos present. Asbestos is definitely a carcinogen.

Where IARC is part of the WHO or world health organisation ants do not need such things. They are providing medical care to each other. This includes amputation of injured limbs.

Ants are literally providing medical care. This has drastically improved survival rates.
