Quick Genealogy Tip #13
This Quick Genealogy Tip is about DNA and how to use x-chromosome matching in genetic genealogy to optimize your DNA results. X-chromosome DNA is automatically tested in autosomal DNA tests. Family Tree DNA, Ancestry DNA, My Heritage DNA, and 23andMe all give x-chromosome data in their autosomal DNA test results. Males are born with an X-chromosome from their Mother and a Y-chromosome from their Father. Females are born with an X-chromosome from both their mother and their father. By knowing the way x-chromosome DNA is inherited it allows genetic genealogists to pinpoint how matches with shared DNA on the x-chromosome are related to one another. Through the use of color-coded fan-charts you can easily begin to pinpoint which lines are possible shared lines between you and your match.
