This band was formed by singer and keyboarder Stefan Zauner and guitarrist Aron Strobel in the 80s and named after a cafe in Munich (Münchener Freiheits means Munich liberty). Other members include Michael Kunzi (bass), Alexander Grünwald (keyboard) and drummer Rennard Henry Hatzke. They had their first success in 1984 helped by the Neue Deutsche Welle but soon found their own niche with a mix of pop and schlager. In 1986 they had their big breakthrough with 'Ohne Dich' which occupied the Top 10 Germany for weeks and even reached #1 in Austria and Switzerland. Their album Traumziel (dreamgoal) was certified Gold. In 1988 their 2nd album Fantasie reached the Top 5 of the German album chart and also was certified gold. They also released some of their songs in English under the group name 'Freiheit' (as Münchener would've been too difficult to speak for English natives) and reached the UK Charts peaking at #14. With their next two albums Purpurmond (purplemoon) and Liebe auf den ersten Blick (Love at first sight) they were able to repeat the success and both albums also were certified gold in Germany.
