It might be one of the highlights of London and one of the buildings that people pose in front of when they come to visit this city; Big Ben is the most famous old building in London city that is still carrying its charm until today but is going through some renovations these days.
Big Ben is a nickname given to the great clock tower that is located in London. It is situated at the north end of the Palace of Westminster that is found in the city and it is also just across London Eye. When we say that it is a nickname then it means that there should be an official name related to this tower; the official name was the Clock Tower but it was changed in 2012 to the Elizabeth Tower to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II - almost all the Londeners and the tourists coming to the city know it as Big Ben and you might never find someone referring to it with its official name.
The completion of Big Ben happened back in 1859 and it was designed by Augustus Pugin. Back during that time, the clock of this tower was considered the biggest and the most accurate four-faced striking and chiming clock in the world. The tower stands at 315 feet and to reach the top there are 334 steps to be climbed. In 2009, this tower celebrated its 150th year anniversary - long time there!
Every city or country in the world is recognized with specific buildings which are found in it and Big Ben is one of those British symbols that is found out there that even most of those movies which are filmed in London manage to bring one or more scenes that this tower appears in.
Big Ben - or Elizabeth Tower - has been part of a Grade I listed building since 1970 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. This make it more of a place that people will be eager to know more about and go to check in reality after seeing all those pictures which come on the internet or on television.
Big Ben - or the Clock Tower as it was firstly named - was designed in the neo-gothic style and it was raised as part of Charles Barry's design for a new palace, after the old palace of Westminster was largely destroyed by fire in 1834.
Even though this building is one of the top touristic attractions that are found in London city along with Coca-Cola London Eye (London Eye View - Millennium Wheel Ov...), Tower Bridge and London Bridge, it does not allow overseas tourists coming to London to enter it, only those local people and they should also book that in advance in order to be allowed to come inside and tour the place but since there is no lift found inside, they will need to climb all those stairs - actually the renovation done to the tower will include adding a lift to the building.
According to some surveys done previously, Big Ben was considered the most famous touristic attraction in London and not just that, but it was also the most recognized symbol of the city that people usually mention when they are asked about the things they know about London city in England or the touristic places which they might go to if they were given the chance to travel to London anytime.
While walking the streets of London and coming to the point where you will be next to Big Ben, in addition to the way it looks and the history it carries behind, you will also get astonished with the famous sound of the clock which all London is setting its clocks on and which is also used as a sound in most of the movies that bring scenes of Big Ben in them.
