This is it... the big one. Remembering the 1991 US Open will most likely evoke conversation of the 39 year old Jimbo flashing his glowing yellow Estusa to the men's semis, but on Friday 5th September 1991 another very special tennis match took place: The semifinal between 17 year old World #2 Monica Seles and 15 year old World #7 Jennifer Capriati.
This sensational tennis match was arguably the moment the "Modern Women's Power Game" was invented.
Slugging it out over a dramatic, explosive and see-sawing 3 sets, these two teenage Uber-stars delivered a performance that would both catapult Monica Seles into the invincible "God-mode" tactician she would enjoy until April '93 (apart from "grunt-gate scandal" in July '92), and likewise plummet the 15 year old Capriati into a 3 year state of anguish & disappointment (apart from September '92 in Barcelona).
Just think, if Jennifer had been victorious in this match, and gone on to defeat the 36 year old Navratilova in the final, possibly, just possibly, we would now be speaking of the "invincible run" of the chirpy teen from Saddlebrook rather that the spritely ethnic-Hungarian from Laurel Oak.
After her massive upset of Martina at Wimbledon just months earlier, Capriati had all the ammunition to capture her home Grand Slam and continue into 1992 as "the" hot player of the '90's.
Anyway, enough of my ramblings... sit back, relax and enjoy this super-dooper classic women's semi - starring two of tennis' all-time legends (and they're both super-cute to boot!)...
