English channel    / @aircrashinvestigate-2   On 29th of December 2012, TU-204 operated by Red Wings airline rolled off the runway at Vnukovo airport, smashed through the fence and crashed into a ditch. Substantial part of the plane ended up on a nearby motorway. Three pilots and 2 cabin crew died. There were no passengers on this flight. This reconstruction is a video version of an official preliminary IAC report (mak-iac.org/rassledovaniya/tu-204-ra-64047-29-12-2…. We would like to thank Mercator (mercator.ru) for letting us use their video. Answers to the most popular questions: 1. Why is the runway at Vnukovo so limited and doesn't have enough roll out space? The runway was built and passed all roll out regulations in 1940. Then, after jet planes mass production began, runway had to be extended all the way till the motorway. 2. Is it true that 15 m/s wind gusts are critical for a plane? Yes. TU-204 piloting instructions state that these values are above allowed limits. Brief overview of the incident: Approach was done at a speed too high for landing. Strong wind gusts of up to 15m/s only made the situation worse. Upon touch down, speed brakes did not deploy because right gears were still in air. This could have been done manually but the flight engineer left them unchanged. More so, being not fully on the ground the reverse has also failed to engage. To be precise, until the plane is fully on the ground, a locking mechanism blocks the engines from going in reverse, but since the mechanism itself was worn out, the captain managed to push the levers in reverse, whilst the system understood it as a command for take off. When the plane was at the end of the runway, it's speed was 215km/h.
