85% of Tennis Points Are Won or Lost Here. In your average tennis match, 85% of points will be won or lost in less than eight shots, which equates to just four shots per player.
Almost 60% of those points will be won and lost during the first four shots (serve plus one or return plus one)
Around 25% of points will be won or lost during shots 5-8.
And here is where it gets very interesting:
- You will win less than half the points you play when you stay at the baseline, just 46%
- However you’ll win two out of three points when you come into the net, around 66%.
So if 85% of all tennis points are over within the first eight shots and we win 66% of net points, doesn’t it make sense to get to the net as often as possible to improve our chances of winning more matches?
When it comes to tennis, in both singles and doubles, finishing the point at the net is one of the most effective ways to win a point.

Yet how often do you come into the net in your average match?
How often do you let short balls pass you by?
And how often do you work on improving your net game?

Most likely you're leaving points on the table, simply from not getting to the net more often. But that changes from today.
After you watch our free video series on the net game, you'll have more motivation than ever before to truly transform that area of your game.
In this free tennis lesson, Coach Simon of Top Tennis Training will explain why it's so important to get to the net as often as you can in both tennis singles matches and in tennis doubles matches.
One of the most common errors that recreational and club players make when they try to volley in tennis is they try to change grips between their forehand and backhand tennis volley.
Normally they use the eastern forehand grip or the semi-western forehand grip on their forehand volley and then they try to switch over to a continental grip or an eastern backhand grip for the backhand volley. This works when they have a softball, which gives them time to execute the grip change or when they are playing weaker opponents. However, on most balls especially when they are rushed for time, this sudden grip change costs them point after point.
The pros use one grip at the net. This is the continental tennis grip. With this grip you can hit every shot you may have to at the net.
This includes the forehand half volley, the backhand half volley, the low forehand volley, the low backhand volley, the medium height forehand volley, the medium height backhand volley, the high forehand volley, the high backhand volley, the traditional overhead smash and the backhand overhead smash. All of these shots can be hit using just one grip, creating time for you at the net.
