Can Dutch speakers understand Afrikaans?
Can Dutch speakers understand Afrikaans? | Part 1In Part 2 of this language challange, Rean from South Africa is going to put participants to a test to see how similar Afrikaans, German and Swedish are. This time, the participants will use their native languages exclusively to communicate so we can test mutual intelligibility between them.
The Afrikaans language is a West Germanic language spoken in South Africa, Namibia and, to a lesser extent, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Afrikaans is a creole language. It has adopted many words from other languages, including German and the Khoisan languages, however estimated 90 to 95% of the vocabulary of Afrikaans is of Dutch origin.
