Mark Hopkins Mansion, NOB HILL - "Palace Hill", San Francisco CA

It was more than 100 years ago that four of San Francisco's most wealthy and powerful railroad and industry magnates had their pick of more than 43 hills on which to build their mansions. Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins, Collis Huntington and Leland Stanford selected Nob Hill in the heart of the city for its stunning views of the bay. It eventually became known as the "Hill of Palaces" because of their palatial mansions. The 1906 earthquake levelled most of the homes, but Nob Hill's grand reputation has carried over to modern times.
