This is the new Ford Escape. It used to be called the Kuga, and that’s not all that’s changed. Let me take you on a quick walk around.

There’s a new bolder face - that grille it’s larger than the old car’s, the headlights have been redesigned and they’re also bi-Xenon cornering headlights.

The fog lights have been swept back more and that makes this overhang look smaller.

Moving down the side of the car – new alloy wheels with new finishes.

All of these panels are the same.

Around the back of the car the taillights the area between them has been restyled.

Tailgate opens with a kick of your foot like this – that’s not new but it is cool.

In the cabin there are more changes. Ford has removed four thousand and eighty-three buttons from the dashboard, well it’s not that many but it feels like it. The dashboard is a lot less cluttered now.

The daggy little button on the side of the gear shifter has gone too – there’s paddles on the steering wheel now.

And the old manual handbrake has gone – there’s an electronic one that gives you more storage space up front for cupholders and your other stuff.

So what do you need to know? There are three grades – the Ambiente, the Trend and the top of the range Titanium.

And there are two petrol engines and a diesel to choose from.

You can now also get the Trend in front wheel drive which is a big thing for Ford because they never had one – and a big thing for you – because you can now have that mid-spec car in just FWD. Do you need AWD? Nah, look it’s good for extra safety and grip, but it’s not vital.

Oh, and hey you really need to know this. There’s a tech package which costs $1300 – used to be $1600 – it adds advanced safety equipment like AEB – that’s auto emergency braking, blind spot and rear cross traffic. Now it’s annoying that all this stuff isn’t standard on the Titanium but it’s worth getting.

So what’s it like to drive? Well I’m in the Titanium now it has the diesel engine – and you can feel that extra torque. The steering is xxxxxx the handling is xxxxxx. There is a bit of body roll. I’ve also driven the FWD trend and the base spec Ambiente and those cars feel pretty good.

There are a few small things that I don’t like. Those tray tables seem like a great idea and they are for kids but when they are stowed they reduce legroom so that I can’t sit behind my driving position.

Ford’s Escape has had more than just a name change – it’s been given the goods which makes this a better suv now – and it needs to be it’s got some tough rivals in the Mazda CX-5 and the RAV4.
