The Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series GXL version embarks on a new chapter with its latest upgrade, arriving in Australia with notable enhancements. This model, part of the 70 Series range introduced in 2007, traditionally featured a 1VD-FTV 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 engine with a five-speed manual transmission. However, the upgraded version introduces a significant change: a 1GD 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, marking a first for the 70 Series.

This versatile 4x4 is available in various configurations, including five-door Wagon, three-door Troop Carrier, and Single and Double-Cab Chassis, with prices starting from $75,600 plus on-road costs for the WorkMate 76 Series Wagon equipped with the new four-cylinder engine. Notably, the Workmate 76 Series Wagon exclusively features the 2.8-litre engine, while other models offer both powertrain options.

Toyota Australia's Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations, Sean Hanley, highlighted the LandCruiser 70 Series's appeal to a diverse range of customers, especially those in farming, mining, and agriculture, as well as off-roading enthusiasts. The new powertrain option is set to enhance the vehicle's appeal further by offering improved weight, payload, and fuel efficiency compared to the V8 variant.

The 2.8-litre four-cylinder engine delivers 150kW at 3400rpm and 500Nm from 1600-2800rpm. It has undergone several mechanical modifications specifically for the 70 Series to ensure optimal performance in challenging conditions and heavy towing, maintaining a 3500kg braked towing capacity. The 4.5-litre V8 engine, producing 151kW and 430Nm, will continue to be available in all 70 Series variants except the 76 Series WorkMate.

The 70 Series GXL grade stands out with added features like front and rear locking differentials for enhanced off-road traction, optional in some other variants. Its design reflects a blend of heritage and modernity, featuring circular LED headlamps, a redesigned grille reminiscent of the 75 Series, and a hood vent inspired by the original 40 Series. The vehicle's interior is modernized with a new instrument cluster, a 4.2-inch color multi-information display, and a 6.7-inch multimedia system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Safety features in the upgraded model include lane departure alert, road sign assist, automatic high beam, and downhill assist control in four-cylinder versions. The Wagon variants also benefit from a new reversing camera.

The color palette remains classic, with an addition of Eclipse Black for the Wagon variant. The vehicle is covered by a five-year/unlimited kilometre Toyota Warranty Advantage, extended to seven years for the engine and driveline, with capped-price servicing for the first five years/100,000km.

Overall, the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series GXL version's upgrade represents a blend of traditional toughness with modern technology and style, aimed at broadening its appeal while maintaining its core strengths.
