Short video on the purification of Shilajit (also shilajatu), from its native rock. For more information please visit: http://shahidbukhari.co.uk/ or https://www.facebook.com/shahidbukharipage/ I’ve had a few comments posted, questioning the method outlined in the above video. There are multiple methods outlined for Shilajatu purification in classical texts, some advocating the use of heat or those which use only sunlight. Both it seems are advocated and both produce a medicinal grade of Shilajatu. Having visited a number of Ayurvedic production facilities in India and Sri Lanka I was able to get a fairly good idea of production methods used in Asia. These favour a number of different Shodhana methods depending upon region. As stated in the video, triphala decoction, milk and cows urine are commonly used liquids in purification. Some concerns have been raised on the use of milk, saying this might introduce bacteria into the resin - resulting in mould formation. I’ve not found this to be an issue myself or in Asia (where the climate is considerably warmer). Additionally, heated water and resin boil off excess liquids. This process is again repeated with triphala decoction, effectively making this argument null and void. In Āyurveda, (as always) small batch quantities are preferable in conjunction with Sūryapuṭa (sun evaporated techniques). Modern production facilities in Asia do not entertain this luxury. My personal experience has shown mass production overall is poor, and that many batches of pre-processed materials are contaminated ie: materials should be sourced with some care. Thank you.
